 It Had To Be Done | | By: JSkills | Published: 06/02/2001 | | | |

It was either this or turn off the site, so that when you typed in www.goofball.com your browser wouldn't just sit there and spin away, endlessly going nowhere in a frustrating grind. Or worse still, you could type in www.goofball.com and it could go somewhere else, like the vulture company who buys our domain name in a dot-com fire sale and points all of our former community to some online casino or something. We thought that asking for a nominal membership fee would be better than that.
To backtrack a little, Goofball.com has been part of a pretty interesting ride since its humble beginnings in October 1998. Yes, I'm sure some of you have heard this story before, so please feel free to skip down a few paragraphs if you like. But for those of you who haven't, I must start out by saying how terribly strange it feels to be at the point where our membership, traffic, and bandwidth has grown to a stage where we have to ask our customers to actually help pay for some of it. Especially the way it all started out - we all have had to work full time jobs while running Goofball.com as a side project. And when I got tired of Robnoxious emailing me all of his silly jokes, pictures, and videos all day at work, I finally asked him a logical question:
"Robnoxious, why not throw it all up on a website?"
And the domain Goofball.com was originally purchased by Robnoxious along with a $25 per month web hosting account. Here is what it first looked like back in 1998.
Shortly after, I got involved and we "officially" launched with the Gentlemen's Glossary, a few jokes, and the classic "100 Grand" audio clip from Opie and Anthony's NY-based radio show. That was it. We were immediately doing hundreds of hits a day. As the months grew, we started adding more sections and by January of 1999, we were doing 10,000 pageviews per day. We were pretty excited.
Soon we were approached by an ad company called Teknosurf (now known as Adversting.com). We started running ads for them and we actually started earning money. At the same time, our hosting provider informed us we had to leave their services, since our site was completely monopolizing the shared server we were on and that it wasn't fair to their other customers.
"Let's get our own server."
And so it was done. We had our very own machine to beat on and so we did. We worked nights and weekends building elaborate database driven tools to allow us (and our users) to pump the site full of great content and let the community feedback drive the quality content to the top. Things grew in a strong and steady fashion. The harder we worked, the more the traffic grew. The server was being pushed to its limits and pages were loading slowly. It seemed we had hit a wall.
By January 2000, we were doing 300,000 pageviews a day. The main issue for us was that advertisers kept dropping the site due to content that was "inappropriate." It was the Uncensored Section. I guess if I paid to advertise on the web, I wouldn't want an add for my latest product displayed on the same page as a picture of a guy getting his sack stepped on by a bondage mistress in spiked heels. Luckily, we were approached by a new ad company, Blah-Blah, who had a generous offer for us. And they didn't care about our content in the Uncensored Area.
As the money we made in advertising grew, we added high-end servers to our server farm. In May 2000, Goofball was reengineered from the ground up. In addition to a new site design, we wrote a whole new publishing system, all of the underlying software code was rewritten, and it was scaled to run in a decent sized multiple server environment. We also decided to be responsible to those people who have children on the net and require registration for the Uncensored Section. We also were graced by the services our long time friend VirtualJul, who jumped into Goofball head first.
Only a short month later, we were informed by Blah-Blah that we would no longer be paid on how many ads we display. We would receive a flat rate regardless of how many ads we ran. This seemed unfair to us. The people at Blah-Blah have always been honest with us, so we were honest and told them we'd be seeking another deal with someone else willing to pay us fairly.
We found another company, willing to pay us on the old model. They were called Aka.com. We got the contracts faxed over and we started running their ads. Although we ran them for a couple of months, we received no sign of a check. So in the fall of 2000, when we all went to the InternetWorld conference in the city (New York) , I decided to arrange a meeting with our contacts over at Aka.com.
Upon arriving, it was a typical dot.com start up - about 50 desks full of twenty-somethings in a large open room occupying a floor in a Chelsea building. We were greeted immediately by a guy named Randy Weiner (pronounced "weener" or "whiner" - I don't remember). This guy had the biggest shit-licking grin on his face you've ever seen - and it never went away. We gave him and some of his people Goofball t-shirts. We made nice small talk about "Jackass" and "The Tom Green Show." But when asked about our money, we got a story about how they at Aka.com were owed "millions" by Urban Box Office (UBO.com) and how money was tied up. Then he finished it with -
"Hey, you'll get paid when we do. What do you think we are, a bank?"
When I strongly reminded him that we'd had a contract that specified we be paid on the first of the month and that they owed us in excess of $60,000, he said,
"Hey, you'll get paid when we do. What do you think we are, a bank?"
It continued that way until we gave up and left. That grin never left his face the whole time we were there. As we walked down onto the street and made our way to the Javitz Center, I couldn't overcome my extreme feelings of dread. We'd given up our guaranteed deal with a decent company like Blah-Blah for this? And then Robnoxious said it,
"You know that guy was a real Johnny Fuckface wasn't he?"
We were never paid by aka.com (they did this to many people and then promptly filed Chapter 11). Blah-Blah said they'd take us back, but with no guarantee on any payments (whatever that meant). We found another company, Adfinity, who promised to pay us at least enough to cover our costs, but they turned out to be liars as well. The climate was changing. The stock market had been falling since March, but in the late summer - early fall of 2000 - it was simply brutal. And the online ad companies were feeling it the most. This translated into us getting paid very little or nothing while continuing to lay out hosting fees.
We returned to Blah-Blah in January 2001 after a few months of burning through the cash we made in early 2000. Our first month back with Blah-Blah paid for 1/6 our server costs. Our traffic was well over 500,000 pageviews a day, we had over 350,000 registered users, we doing close to a terabyte a month in transfer and ironically enough we were starting to talk about either cutting our losses or figuring out how many months we had left to go at this rate.
We figured the only thing to do was to ask for membership fees. I hated this for many reasons of course. The first is having to ask sucks, the second is that we'd lose so many nice people, and finally the amount of work was pretty huge on the technical side. But we really had no choice.
Many other sites are currently charging for access (and charging a lot more than we are for a lot less than what we offer in my opinion). We have gotten so much positive feedback from our core members and although polls showed that only 11% of you would be willing to pay, we figured it would be better to support that small loyal following than shut the site down in three months.
To top it off, Blah Blah was recently purchased by UGO. UGO promptly dropped us for "inappropriate content". That's funny huh? So we now officially have NO steady income from advertising (or any other source for that matter).
So tonight's the night to turn the payment system on. The overall cost: $19.99 per year, which equates to about 5 cents per day. Existing members will have a month's grace period to renew with existing usernames and new members will be required to pay. (You can renew now by scrolling back up to the Goofball login box in the left navigation and clicking "Renew My Account" or from the link on your fan page.) Our traffic will certainly drop dramatically, which will allow us to decrease our hosting fees and at the same time maintain the same level of performance we have in the past.
"The Internet Should Be Free"
Yeah, I used to believe that too. But the fact is that servers cost money to rent. And we're not going to give up without a fight. We all have families and have taken enough time away from them without having to take money from them too. We're not asking for payment for the hours of time we spend bringing you this thing called Goofball.com. We're just asking you to help keep Goofball.com alive and kicking.
Thanks to all of you who have made this a great place in the past few years. We'll miss those of you who choose not to stay and promise to cherish those of you who do.

Why don't you folks who run this site refresh the "Top Goofs" list, and others, every so often. How 'bout once a month? Some things on each list are classic and will never move off without some change in presentation - but they do get old and should be replaced.

IMNSHO, Goofball is one of the best sites on the net. It's humor is much like the old National Lampoon magazine. I would be willing to shell-out the $20.00 per year membership. For the people who bitch about the "inapproiate content" should open their eyes and see that that stuff is in the UNCENSORED SECTION. Duuhhh!!!. And we all know the uncensored stuff is password protected. If people can't keep their passwords secret, then why do they even have a computer???.

You said you started out as just some fun guys exchanging fun jokes. There should be no charge for such things. Back in the day of BBS's I made and ran one of the east coast's largest BBS's. (Wild-Wild-West BBS) and we had a TON of users, adult sections, etc. I decided to charge a very small price for use. My user base dropped to 2% of what I had. Yes, the net should be free and I personally feel there has to be another and better way. There always is. 20.00 is nothing. Left hand pocket money, but you'll see that users out there just won't take the time to pay when they can get this elsewhere. Oh yes, some will pay. Not many. Not enough...-Magumbo

Reading the comments above, the ratio appears fairly good. Fair number of people staying = income.
Lots of people leaving = decreased bandwidth = decreased overhead.
As for all you people out there who are migrating to other sites, think that you're not alone. All the other losers are migrating there as well, driving up the costs of operating THOSE sites.
Oh well... Grampa always said: "Never give people advice. Smart people don't need it. Stupid people won't take it."

Reality is a mother, isn't it? All you .coms are reaping the rewards of trusting other.coms and you are all finding out that contracts and handshakes and "don't worry, we will send you the check as soon as the girl in the bookkeeping department is back from having her nails done", are nothing but the same hucksters you .coms were trying to avoid. Instead of going to people who had a business record you went to nobodies and now you expect us, the internet users to pay for your stupidity. No fucking way!! If we start paying, every other "free site" will start charging fees. The whole idea of the internet was to have "free info & content". Your plan to charge fees is so against what the internet was meant to be that it is obscene. Take the money you need out of your other pocket or say goodbye and get a real job.

Looked at my favorites list and Goofball's at the top.Money Order will go out this week guy's. I guess that mean's I'm in.Love the site, hope the quality stay's with less subscribers and less submissions.

I would like to pay. but moving into an apartment. It looks like extras like here are going to have to drop me. Why do places like
http://www.peek4free.com
Does not charge and they are an adult website. You have to keep looking for banners without restrictions. (Stay over a few years with a company you have the right under the "grandfather clause" to keep the old contracts.
So It was fun while it lasted but I can not afford it while pay for Rent, AC, Gas for the cars and for cooking. I kew it was a matter of time before everything will not be free. Look at air in the gas station you have to 50 cents.
Well I had a great time here. but I will stay until my time is up. Can you or will you ever be free again?
Please let me know. thank you.None at the moment.

Goofball, you have been like a brother to me, always there to give me a laugh when I was down. If it all goes badly, then I shall miss thee. It was a hell of a ride... too bad it had to end by you guys getting the shaft from people trying to screw people over. Maybe some other day, some other time.

Well, in the light of seeing I waste well more than $20 a year on nonsense that I don't need anyway, I would do it. However, I have posted I know of 10 pictures, avi's, nonsense things on this site, and have not seen the first thing. So, in this view, I see this bodes not to well to claim my money for you guys...I have enjoyed the site, but alas, when the site starts charging, I go the way of the dodo...thanks for all the mammories...you could learn alot from a dummy...

I drop in now and then, make a few comments, look around and then off I go. I'd pay I think...good luck.Leonard Fong....Chinese Dutch Uncle

Best of luck,
