LEXINGTON. Va - The venerable Virginia Military Institute is home to 160 years of military tradition, and now its first mother. Since VMI began to allow female students in 1997 it has struggled through several embarrassing incidents of sexual misconduct. Now VMI is now planning how to accommodate its first pregnant cadet. School officials said the cadet, whom they declined to identify, has a choice of taking a leave of absence, living in separate quarters, or remaining in the barracks. For now, she has chosen to remain in the barracks and to continue with the academic and physical program. Officials said the cadet did not violate any rules and that no disciplinary action would be taken.

You know, no matter what, cadets have opinions too, and whether you Alumni or Admin. officials like it or not, they're going to voice it. The cadets feel like they've been reamed by everyone from the goverment straight on down to the commadant. For those of you standing up for this pregnant cadet, get your head on straight. She tossed her cadetship around with reckless abandon, and probably did it in barracks. 85% of people still don't believe women belong at VMI, here's just another reason, no matter how tired the old debate is. For those of you who don't know VMI, don't fucking criticize it, half the cadets there still don't understand it. I still have pride in my school, its some of the cadets that are the problem.

I am a former female cadet from vmi and disgusted by this pregnancy. I left VMI after almost two years for a variety of reasons, including less-than-stellar grades and realizing that I had no interest in the military at all. The main reason that I left was because I wanted to experience life in a normal college. I wanted to party, date, and have freedom to do whatever I wanted. This is definitely not possible at VMI. VMI is not a "college" as some cadets, or civilians, would like to believe. It is an institute, and one of a kind. Therefore, aspects of a normal college, such as dating and having sex with whoever, should not be allowed. VMI is not perfect (and what is), but when you start to allow dating in the core of cadets and pregnancies, you are giving VMI characteristics of a normal college that will not set it apart. Another reason that I left was because I realized that even though I could pass all parts of the PT test, and I held rank, and I never once missed a ratline activity (stoop runs, force marches, DRC workouts, etc.), I still did not belong there. Like one guy responded-he, like most males, went there to get away from the distractions of females and other aspects of a normal college. This pregnancy is a prime example of how letting girls attend VMI has ruined that. And I do not care what anybody says-girls at VMI has changed everything! It is not the same school that it was, and it will never be again. And although I never dated another cadet while I was there, or even "messed around" with one, I still felt that I did not belong there (almost all of my female brs hooked up with other male cadets). If your a girl there and you want to mess around, do VMI a favor and go to a normal college where that is not only accepted, but expected. Leave VMI and the military to the guys, and everybody will be better off.

To the ladies and gentleman from outside of the Corps of Cadets I appreciate your attempt to understand the anger of the individuals from the Corps who have postings, but please you don't understand the system therefore please don't criticize us. Do not call me a coward for refusing to post my name. I do not post it because I enjoy what little freedoms I have at the Great Institute. For many, to know that we are restricted on how often we are allowed to leave may come as a relief, but to me it comes as the reason that so many have degraded themselves with their remarks. I am currently a 1st class private and am looking forward to graduating and gaining my freedoms back. My years at the Institute like many have been difficult, my grades not the best, and being put on confinement for stupid mistakes on occassion. Do not allow the statements of my counterparts to give you an overall view of my school because the majority of us are not racist, nor are we the male chauvanist pigs that the National Organization of Women (NOW) would lead you to believe we are. Being a man who attends VMI I have been stereotyped for the past 4 years being called such things as an asshole, rapist, drunk, and even sexist. Despite all of this I've managed to find myself engaged and happy. However, this incident has really angered me. First, yes there is a female cadet who is pregnant, but so what we are a college and many college women become pregnant. Yes VMI has had its problems and thanks to the ever loving press of this great country they have become magnified. To many Alumni, yes women are here but it's not the mens' faults, but many of the attitudes are. I myself was told I would be accepted by an administrations official prior to the co-educational decision of the Supreme Court. I myself was disheartened to know that my number one choice of VMI was going to be changing thus causing me to question my decision. I wanted an all male college to keep me away from the distraction that women cause to men. Yes this sounds sexist, but I think we all know it doesn't matter what a woman looks like mens eyes will immediately turn to her. Gentlemen of the "Old Corps" I have the utmost respect for you. I love the Institute and since my days as a rat have never wished to be somewhere else. To society as a whole the press has slanted the whole situation at VMI. They claim the women do fine in all aspects of VMI life, I beg to differ. In my years at the Institute, all of which there have been women there, I have seen the women do well academically, but I have also only seen a very select few do well in the physical aspects. Many choose to act injured or prolong nursing of injuries during the rat year what cadets call "riding the GIM." True some men do this also but the vast majority seems to be done by women. Also since I've been a cadet I've heard of many honor violations by women, the vast majority of which were reversed by the superintendant. I've actually witnessed approximately 3 women get kicked out due to honor violations (rolled) in my time at the Institute. One of these was like some instances overturned by the Board of Visitors, but never returned to the school. Personally I believe that someone who finds themselves innocent enough to take it to this level and not return once the Honor Court's decision is overturned is not only a coward for refusing to face their peers again but also a person who knew they were guilty, but just wished to clear their name on paper. For the current members of the Corps, to paraphrase the Charlie Daniel's band "The Mother I may have stumbled, but she will never fall." Stick together brother rats and underclassmen because like the ratline we can only overcome this thing together. Remember the Institute Shall Never Die. To the parents-to-be your actions of sexual conduct is average amongst men and women of our age however, the two of you should have done whatever possible to keep it quiet knowing that at the Institute we are always looked upon with a microscope. Therefore, your allowance of the press to get their hands on this issue has brought disgrace upon the school at which I attend, and love. To those who may follow and become in this situation remember do the right thing because the liberal press and public hate the fact of anything being military. Therefore they do their best to make everything that may happen within the walls of a military institution a scandal. God Bless and Rah Virginia Mil.

I cannot hold my anger anymore. Once again in this era of "political correctness" what is right and what is wrong has been blurred in order to satisfy quotas.
I am a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute when the school was all-male. I attended VMI over the service academies (I did get appointed to one of the service academies) because VMI had strong standards and a brotherhood that had not been required to change because of the admission of women. I was proud to call my self an alumnus of the Institute. Not anymore. VMI today is not the same school I attended.
I believe that all male or all female schools are a good thing. In the US today, there are only two all-male schools left (Hampton-Sydney is one of them) compared with over 50 all-female colleges. Would you like to talk about fair?
But my real anger is reserved for the administration of the Virginia Military Institute. If anything is responsible for the destruction of the Institute it should be laid at their feet. They have allowed the school to go from a respected institution to a laughing stock on a joke website. When VMI announced that it would accept women, the administration also said that women would be treated no differently than the male cadets and no standards would change. Has that happened? NO!
Why don't women get their heads shaved as male cadets? Remember, no differently than male cadets. Women have chosen to go to VMI to get the "experience" an experience that requires everyone to start at the same level.
What about the requirement that you must pass the VMI PT test to graduate? It has been done away with.
What about passing the entire PT test? When I was a cadet if you failed any part of the PT test you failed the entire test. Now you can fail parts and still pass the test. No changing any standards, right?
What about cadets receiving curtains in their rooms for privacy? VMI is supposed to be a spartan lifestyle void of privacy during the first year. Why after 155 years the need for curtains?
And finally breakout. That term now has no meaning. Even the densest feminist must find it interesting that the macho breakout both in barracks and up the hill has now been replaced with a "grueling" 18 mile march that certain persons (permits) were allowed to skip. (Although I heard that breakout was on breakout hill this year. Question: how many fire trucks were used?)
I talked to COL Dabney on the parade deck a few months after the VMI Board of Visitors announced their decision to admit women. COL Dabney, a former Commandant of VMI, made that statement that VMI would never change its standards on admitting women. He said if it was forced to, the VMI administration would close the school, turn the academic buildings over to the Rockbridge Community College and run history tours of barracks. Things have certainly turned out differently. The VMI administration is so busy ensuring that the school remains open in any way that it has lost the meaning of what VMI stood for. It used to stand for honor, unity and sacrifice. Now it's only another college doing a business. To anyone out there considering VMI for a college education, go to UVA, be in ROTC and have fun. You’ll get the same education.
To the female cadets, neither I nor anyone else can change the fact that you can attend the VMI. But do you or do you not want the VMI experience? Why have you allowed VMI to change the standards? Where is the outrage?! Until there is outrage and you demand the same standards you will never be totally accepted by your BRs. Do not whine about it until you do.
Finally, it is unfortunate that a female cadet is pregnant. VMI does not need that kind of publicity. If the cadet truly cares about VMI, she would leave the institute and return after the child is born to avoid this controversy. This is certainly not a victory for women at VMI. Yes, male cadets have and will get women pregnant. There is a double standard there. But if you want to be in this macho world then you must be better than the men. You DO have something to prove.

This is precisely the reason that VMI did not wish to assimilate women. There has not been a positive outcome from that decision yet. VMI ingrains the brother rat system into each cadet. When women entered they agreed to still be called brother rat, as not to differentiate themselves from the male corps. You do not sleep with your brother rat. We all understand now that women are here, and despite our best efforts they will remain here. In order to preserve the tranquility among our corps we must re-evaluate our system of equality. If women come here they come here to be cadets, and to be treated equally, not to be girls in uniform. Before women cadets did not have to watch what they said to each other for fear of Title IX. So women I emplore you not to have more than coloquial relations with your brother rats and to attempt to be treated equally. Do not call Title IX if someone says something to offend you, if you want us to treat you equally you must act equally.

Free Speech (0 replies)
started by Anonymous Goofball
(03.11.2001 10:43:12 AM EST)

As much as I enjoy free speech, the Constitution and its amendments make no mention of a public institution limiting free speech:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. "

Note that the word "congress" is used; not the VMI administration. By a strict interpretation of the 1st Amendment, we can see that VMI can limit our "free speech." The military as well limits free speech, esp. from subordinates toward superiors (i.e. an officer publicly speaking out against the president).
But that really isnt the issue here. It is a pregnant cadet at VMI who doesnt have the pride to do the right thing. The meeting at CTT did not stop the posting of valid arguments by enraged members of the corps. In America, you can use "hateful" language. You can dress up like a Klan member, and parade around Washington if you so desire (these rights are protected by Congress; even the ACLU will admit this). We did not fight against this in World War II, and current cadets were not even alive then. If racism were such an issue during WWII, why weren't the concentration camps bombed? Point proven. Do not compare cadets to Fascists or Supremacists.

Certain "choice words" tend to come out when one is angered, especially about something close to them. Cadets do not like to be at VMI, but they do (but seldom admit) like the image of the Institute. The aforesaid commenters on this website are not cowards for posting their points of view. They would surely be dismissed from VMI, the very place they struggle to protect. In their eyes, and in the majority of the rest of ours, pregnancy in the corps is a mortal sin. But then again, this kind of stuff happens only in America.

Obviously the pregnant cadet issue has poured salt into a wound that has not been treated nor healed, only ignored and the pain hidden from public view. However, the truth is this: these are the cards we as cadets have been dealt. The laws of the land have been forced upon us. It is our duty, as believers in the institute, to make it happen. And yes, that means make it happen for the men and women who attend. Surely this is a sore subject, but what did you honestly expect. Pregnancy was just as certain to be a part of the new corp as seperate shower facilities. The administration has failed us. In its diligant efforts to win the battle against eqaul rights, it has yet to realize its over. They lost. Now they need to step it up a notch. If this place has to work for men and women, then damnit, make it the best military institute in the world for both of them. Quit dragging your feet and sulking over your loss. Step it up and make it happen! Providing separate showers and giving title IX briefings does not cut it. It's going to take more than that. I honestly believe that the admin cannot see the forest for the trees. It can be done, it can be successful, the I can produce honorable men and women, so lets stop all the whining. Remember we are in this together for the love of this noble institution. Many who believe they are fighting to save the institute are slowly but surely working to destroy all it has come to stand for. Yes, brothers take up arms in her defense, but let us not turn those arms inward on ourselves.

VMI administration are no dummies (excluding Roy H.'57)[kill kong!]....they simply believe that these postings will end now that the cadets are concentrating wholy on the all-important duties of drinking beer and going to those neat little places where women take thier clothes off (down in Texas, mostly :o)and they probably are right!. But let this be known. VMI has already punished several cadets for exercising thier first amendment right of free speech(whether you agree or not)The tactics of the "new administration" only bring back memories of those poor days when our country was subject to the "spinmiesters" of the Clinton Administration and never quite knew what the "real" truth was. Ever since the first woman was admitted to VMI, the administration has gone from a group of admirable torchbearers of tradition, to becoming puppets to the Dept of Justice. But what do you expect from yankee administrators who have the back bones of chocolate e-clairs? Such is life...AT VMI. Does this mean that what VMI is doing is legal or not? Is VMI legally able to block Cadets from accessing information over the Internet? Also and more importantly is VMI legally allowed to block Cadets from expressing their Freedom of Speech. The KKK has a right to protest according to the Supreme Court. I certainly don't agree with what they believe in, but they do have that American right. Are VMI Cadets not given even equal rights to such an extremist group as the KKK? Please, someone tell me how VMI, a State School, which certainly knows the laws with it's past years spent arguing in them, can take away the First Amendment Rights of ANYONE?

I would like to say that if you all consider yourself soldiers then I suggest you cease the arguement and return to normal cadet life. If you are a one or two, then most likely you are on the verge of commissioning into the armed forces. This responsibility is bigger than your intestinal fortitude, or lack there of. If you all are such good cadets then why are you questioning constituted authority and blatantly disrespecting your command? Stay true to you family, country, school, and corps of cadets! The biggest multiplier on the battlefield is leadership. Who's going to take charge and cease this ignorance. Your female BR's are strong, dedicated, and meet the same guidelines as you all. They perform better than you all overall, PHYSICALLY and mentally. Statistically, females are more susceptable to stay at the institute based on retention rates. How many males left? How many males got drummed? How can you write this horrible stuff about your cadets and use words like tradition and brother rat, when your trashing your own people. I think that if you wrote anything on this discussion board you should go talk to the Commodant and explain your veiws with him! your all a bunch of bitches and I have lost all respect for you because you do not have unit cohesion. Good luck in the military because your not mature enough right now to step up to the challenge. You don't hear about cadets talking like this at the Citadel do you? To confirm all rumors, yes VMI has blocked access to this site. I am a VMI cadet, and through about two minutes work, I was able to access this site. I felt I had to in order to clear the air a little. If I get caught, I probably get in trouble, but I love VMI in my heart and need to do this for my school's heritage and good name. Call me a coward because I don't leave my name, but if you went here you would understand why I couldn’t. VMI teaches wonderful ideals. It teaches that honor is uncompromising. It teaches discipline and camaraderie are paramount in life. It promotes the citizen soldier. Yet, it is damn near impossible to love when you are here. Our life here at VMI is intense, stressful, and demanding. Our rooms are Spartan and our schedules are full. I have seen a lot here during my time here that has really disillusioned me to the grandeur of the Institute. As with every institution, from Congress down the line to volunteer fire departments has its flaws. They all have their corruption and people who will do ANYTHING to get ahead. They all have their yes men, the troublemakers their shitbags, their idealists, statement makers, and people just trying to get by. Well, VMI has all of those. We may be an elite military academy, but we cannot get away from the stereotypes that are inherent in every Institution.
My opinion on the matter of the pregnant cadet is not relevant. Nor is this the forum for me to express my opinion. For those who did, please consider the lack in professionalism that you displayed. Yes, we are all entitled to our First amendment right of freedom of speech, but true leaders know when they should and shouldn't do that. For those of you who did express your opinion and did so with bigotry and ignorance, you are a true disgrace to my school. I wish I knew who each of you were so I could tell you to your face. Not only are you ignorant, but you are also cowards, because I know you wouldn't express that opinion without anonymity. For the civilians out there, please excuse these comments; they are truly an expression of a minority here at VMI. I am sure that most cadets would agree on the poor judgment both cadets displayed in this incident, but few cadets believe the racist, sexist, ignorant statements made over the past week. As a well-respected friend of mine told me earlier...just because someone has the microphone, doesn't mean they have anything worth saying.

Today for CTT we were given a political speech by the 1st Class President. He talked of things like acting like cadets here at VMI. Yet never once mentioned that getting pregnant, the father or mother, with another cadet is not acting like a Cadet. The fearless leader also decided to challenge anyone to stand if they had the courage to do so, those individuals who posted their opinions on this site. He told us that he would have transfer sheets ready for those who came to his room. My question is why do Cadets who are US Citizens NOT have the right to speak their minds? Not only on this website, but ANYWHERE they feel. I was unaware of the legality of a STATE school taking away a FEDERAL right. Maybe someone, including the ADMN who are intentionally keeping cadets from speaking freely, can educate me on the whole legal issue concerning this.

O is trying to have super savings special in the courtyard during PTs. The latest female cadet update: she was seen lifting weights today in the weight room.........is this healthy? OH and for Mr. Ginsberg, could you give the admin a brief article on the freedom of speech. OH that's right, we don't have any at VMI, but we can still die for our country in the US Armed Forces and have children in barracks.

Why are female cadets not on birth control. VMI isn't half the whorehouse that west point is, but still steps have to be taken. Then one ponders why her brutish looks did not serve as an effective birth control. This entire situation can be blamed on desperation. If cadets were allowed out in the real world to get thier "nut" on once in a while the fellas at VMI wouldn't have to deal with this shit.

We came to this school in no small part because of the tradition that resides within the corps. We have since learned that VMI had very little to do with the military. The cadet in question arrived here not to engage in a disciplined lifestyle but to stand in a small circle and throw shit at track meets. If she had any deference towards a meaningful cadetship than she would not have entered her second class year as obise and physicaly revolting as she did. The sad truth is that a before and after photo shows no dramatic change other than the grin of an outcast apparently contented with usurping the dignity of those around her.

What ever happened to the meaning my BR. Is it a bogus statement or does it have meaning. Yes Hell week is to weed out those who don't want to belong or have the will to stick it out. However, once someone does should not all the BR's stick together to not let another one fall if at all possible. I'm not talking about an honor code violation just plain not seeming to get it done. Whenever a BR leaves it should be painfull for us all as that person is our BR. Oh yes, maybe it does not count till after breakout. Maybe so, but that even brings the commitment to fellow BR's even higher.

Yes she has made a choice to stay in barracks. Do we honor that choice and chose to help our fellow BR make it happen. Would this not happen for any other BR who came down with a special medical condition but wanted to stick it out if at all possible. It is not to say that cadets who are not BR's should feel this way but it would be nice it did transend one's own class. But if not than at least her BR's should be standing along side and supporting.

Just hoping the B for Brother means something. What does it mean to you???

It would be a disgrace to America. Also, they are doing a good job making VMI look like a school for uneducated hicks from Virginia, even though I know differently. You guys seem to be holding the pregnant female cadet to higher standards then you would a male cadet who got a female (non cadet) pregnant. I see no difference. Both types showed poor in judgment in having unprotected sex. The only tangible difference is that you can tell that a female cadet is soon to be a parent while a male cadet you can't tell. I know of male cadets who had children while still members of the Corps...and yes some of them were members of the "Old Corps". Many of those of course were unwilling to be REAL MEN and accept the responsibility of their actions. The pregnant female cadet HAS to accept responsibility. If the father had been a non cadet would you still be so angry? I think you guys would since you all seem like bunch of rather ignorant unworldly people. So, I suppose then, that a male cadet can go out and impregnate as many women as he wants (granted they're not cadets of course) but a female cadet must abstain from sex because heaven forbid she become pregnant (even if the father isn't a cadet).

I wonder what General George Catlett Marshall VMI '1901 would think of some of these responses. That does not embody the spirit and ideals of what your school stands for. Men and women of the corps, you know VMI is a separate enitity from the rest of society. You have a hard life in barracks and around post. Enforce the class and honor systems as they have in the past and VMI will make it through, yes, the worst times. General Hunter bombarded barracks, and VMI came back. Do not squander the opportunity of getting that degree presented to you by saying these things. Suck it up and drive on. Think about the insignificance of this one cadet, and remember you are there for a degree and an education. The GC does have rules for PDA and they apply to everyone. Enforce them when necessary, all of them. I have faith in every single one of you, make your graduation day the proudest day of your life. Make your experience worth it.

Things like that do happen, but is it really an accident when you sleep with countless numbers of people, most of whom are cadets. A lot of Corporations prohibit "dating" other employees because it does lead to significant problems. And those of you who say she's not a whore, have you seen her?? I have seen her around doing very precarious things both on post and off!!! I know several cadets she has engaged in sexual relations with not just the father. Do you ever see her with the father anymore?? Another thing to those of you who say, "it’s her problem and now she will have to deal with it." Let HER deal with it herself. How much do you want to bet she will soon be getting WIC, Welfare, and all of the various other programs that WE ALL PAY FOR!!!! Or that she is allowed to go to community college back home for the semesters to come and still walks away with a VMI diploma. Cadets can't do that. All of this for something that she wanted to do? This is not a one-time mistake. It’s living on the edge and finally falling off. I am not an "unsexed nerd,” however I do not think it is honorable or moral to sleep with fellow cadets of a place that is supposed to mean so much, with our comrades who share everlasting bonds with all who have strained through Jackson Arch or wear our ring. It drives a stake through the center our veracity as a CORPS.

Common sense tells you that West Point and Texas A&M are loving the reaction that all of you Keydets out there are posting. No one blames you for your anger, I'd be angry too because of the rich VMI history. But your postings are making you look dishonorable and uneducated. Think of things this way, school ends in 2 and a half months and she will obviously not return. And hopefully other female cadets will learn from this experiance and never make the same mistake. But don't lower yourselves to the level of so many idiots out there by posting such comments. I know and the world knows that military schools should remain all male, and yes, I am a female. If there is this huge need for a female military school, then let's build one. At any rate, I'm sure she knows what she's done because I'm sure she is at least getting the cold shoulder on post. You get the point. There are people behind you.

To the NON-cadets posting propaganda about how cadets are disgracing their school, you need to set your cafe-late-double-mochachi down and take a look around. You have obviously never been to a military school and neither have I, so don't ever mock it as not being a precious institution. Until you have experienced THEIR situation, don't make assumptions. I will agree some cadets are making stupid comments, but I'm sure its a response to built up rage from dealing with THEIR setting(which you dont experience, do you?) This talk of the "real world" is funny too. Your talking about the MTV syndicated show right? I go to FSU the farthest experience from VMI and I can easily see your politically correct ignorance towards this whole situation. Experience it then talk shit.

Now for women in general i respect them and heck i love one, but there is a place for woman and that is some where other than VMI, like in the military they can serve but not in combat, and if woman want to be treated egual the should stop taking the double standards and the hand outs and stay the hell away from trying to kill traditions such as all male education. if they want the VMI experance they should date or marry a VMI man.

Okay all you asshole cadets who think they're so much better than the rest of the population, listen up. In case you have forgotten, giving birth to a child is one of the most beautiful things a woman can do, and I feel that this young women is in ways both blessed and not so blessed to be pregnant. She is blessed because many women cannot bear children and yet she is not so blessed because people like you put her down and call her names. You have no right to do so. Now, I'm sure she didn't mean to get pregnant, but you have to remember that things like that happen, it was an accident. And, because of the comments people like you have been making on this forum, in the barracks and around post, she has been ostracized. Not everyone is perfect, including those of us who choose to put our opinions on this. She may have made a mistake, and I'm sure she knows that, but now she is the one that will have to deal with it. You aren't doing anything by rubbing it in her face and by trying to smear her and the father's name. All you are doing is making youselves look like immature little boys. And as a reminder, the Institute shall never die. For those of you who seem to think that now it will because of an incident like this. And one more thing, if you were in this position, as either the mother or the father, would you call yourself a disgrace? a whore? or any of those other things that you know you've said? No, I didn't think so.

OK, so she got pregnant. so what? leave her alone, it happens. Your precious institution? Real precious, where you haze people and look at porn all the time and objectify women. If I had my way your school would be shut down for good. I agree that if women are going to go there, they should be held to the exact same standards as the men, and I also think she shouldn't be there if she's pregnant. But do you really think calling her a fat cow and saying crap about her is going to restore you "precious reputation?" Only idiots would think that. And unfortunately, your school is full of them. You're mostly a bunch of brats who need to grow up. Grow up children. Learn to live in the real world.
