 ELECTION DAY REPLAY - Gore Pulls a Quayle | | By: Robnoxious | Published: 11/07/2000 | | | |
| WASHINGTON — Vice President Al Gore's claim that he is
the father of the Internet drew amused protests from congressmen
on Capitol
Hill. Gore, who supposedly coined the term
"information superhighway," raised eyebrows with a pronouncement
he made during a CNN interview.
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the
initiative in creating the Internet," he said when asked to cite
accomplishments that separate him from another Democratic
presidential hopeful, former Sen. Bill Bradley of New Jersey.
House Majority Leader Dick Armey, said that even under the
time-honored tradition of politicians taking
credit for
everything, Gore's statement is an "outrageous claim."
The Internet, originally called ARPANET, dates to 1969, when
the Defense Department began funding the project, and later
professors and scientists used the medium to quickly exchange
research data. Gore, then 21, was still eight years away from
joining Congress.
Boy 0 boy, Gore is commiting political suicide with
these
comments. Bill says he never inhaled, Gore certainly
did.

This is funny. AND ACCURATE! I was intending to write a similar article myself...
Why are you people so wrapped up in this thing? I realize that a 'true american patriot' is supposed to worry about petty things such as presidents and such... BUT BOTH OF THEM ARE MORONS!
The USA is more than strong enough to survive a bad leader. (see the last 8 years)
And as for florida? I think that a headline similar to: "presidential election: day 12" is absurd.
and just in case you peoples wanna say I am so brave because I am anonymous.... my name is Matt and my email is mcaley@hotmail.com. I just forgot my username because I was laughing at some of you so hard.

Al Gore of complaining! Florida laws are set up for automatic recounts when a cetain percentage differentiates the candidates. A recount was performed and that didn't work out to Gore's favor. Now I read they are going to do a manual recount. Excuse me, but this isn't an election where you recount until you like the outcome.
I know there was protesting in Florida but I have not heard of any rioting there. Are you s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g this point or are you adding fuel to the fire. Let me pull a Clinton here and ask, define "normal people". See how ignorant that sounds but it worked for Clinton!
If Al Gore wants to go jogging or play football or run down Pennsylvania Blvd. with his pants down....I could care less. You can be guaranteed his henchmen are working behind the scenes. Mr Daley is out there working his rearend off bringing more dishonor to his family name!
If my brain freezes over, at least I can thaw it out and it will work perfectly. I believe your's has thrown a rod and overheated and there is not a mechanic in sight.
Way to sum up your whole article. Your shallowness shows!
Don't take any wooden nickels!

It doesn't matter who those 19000 voters were voting for. In democracy, everyone should get to vote. Yes some of them are just plain stupid, but that doesn't mean that their votes dont count! Some of the ones on the smarter end of the spectrum checked who they were voting for, and realized their 'boo-boo'. They asked for new ballots (it SAYS on the ballots you can get a new one if you ask...) BUT THEY WERE TURNED DOWN. That was NOT supposed to happen. The hag who did that should have some legal issues...
Anyway, it was NOT Al Gore who complained, it was NOT Al Gore who asked for a recount (At first, florida WAS HIS, but then there was a recount, and it went to bush.)
The people who started rioting and protesting, etc. were the same people who's votes were thrown out because of poor ballot design (sure they're stupid, but in democracy, even stupid people have the same rights). If you go to yahoo and search for news, pictures, 'florida ballot,' you will notice a lot of normal people holding up signs that say "make grandma's vote count!" and etc. You will notice that there are no pictures of Al Gore holding up a sign... These people were angry on their own, Al Gore did not tell them to do that.
All Al has been doing the last couple days is jogging and playing two hand touch football with his family. Now if anything about that suggests that he's secretly causing voter uprisings at night, maybe bushes will fly and your brain will freeze over.
THIS HAS BEEN YET ANOTHER PUBLICK ("") SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT.
If you did not have enough time to read all that, I will sum it up:
GO TO HELL.

and I use the term "Mr." loosely, calling Republicans, assholes, wholy shows your true colors. Every American was given their "American Right" to vote. I guess those 19,000 voters needed a democrat to enter the voting booth with them so they could make the so called "right choice." If they cannot follow simple election instructions then whose fault is that? It's time for people to start being held accountable for their mistakes. The easy thing to do would be to blame somebody else. I have a lot better things to do than argue with a liberal such as yourself. Why would I want to leave this funny site to go to your dumbass site. Do us all a favor......come back when you can't stay as long!Don't take any wooden nickels!

You (article writer) are a complete hippocritical moron. You are really stretching the facts when you say Al Gore was streaching the facts.
He did not say he "invented the internet." Nor did he say "that he coined the coined the ter, 'internet superhighway.' You (again, I am referring to the article's writer) are obviously trying to stretch the facts, or are one of the idiots who belive the asshole republicans. I think they are assholes not because I am a democrat, which I am not, but because they ARE assholes! I noticed most of the people posting here think Gore is a crybaby. Get real: 19,000 votes were through out because of a confusing ballot design. That has obviously not happened before, so its obviously an irregularity. And for those of you who think Al talked them into speaking up, go lick George W Shrub! Because the people of that county were angry about their vote being thrown out, and they have every right to be pissed off!
And finally... for those of you who think there's no difference between 'creating' and 'inventing,' there is, and that is this:
inventing referrs to FIRST creating the IDEA and PROTOTYPE of someting.
I can CREATE a ball of clay with out inventing the first ball of clay! I can make an initiative for making the internet populated (and have the effect of the booming internet we have today) without INVENTING the internet.
And "hardball" if you think Al Gore has an IQ of 2, take a look at George Bush (not to mention yourself.)
Gore took the initiative in CREATING (NOT inventing) the internet. Would the internet be the internet we know today if there was no market for it, thus no sites on it, thus just plain boring? DAMN NO!
So go lick George bush you asshole dumbass republican corperate zombies!
And get a life, Robnoxious, doing something better than twisting insignificant stories and geting high on brain doses from republican shitheaddumbass-etc.-es
If you're pissed with this dumbass web site, go to someplace better:

Bush took his home state, and people aren't stupid. Florida is primarily a retirement state, correct? Older people who live there will naturally stick with a name that brought success, just as we would... would you rather own a Rolex watch, or a Bolex? So, between having his home state stolen by Bush, and naturally the voices of the people being heard, of course he's going to stand in the sidelines crying "I want a recount.... wah!" and have one of his cronies go do the dirty work of announcing it for him, instead of being a man (for which he could only wish to be), and letting it go for what it was. The man is a freaking sociopath..... of course he's going to give his delusions to the people at actual fact..... geez!DUH!!!!!!

Now we see the true colors of Al Gore. Is this man really, really right for the Oval Office. He's the only one, right now, throwing a fit over the Florida votes. I think its time that Al throw in the frickin' towel and go at it in four years. By that time he will our will not have the ammunition to knock the Repub's out of office. Who else thinks its time for this to happen and the elections be over?

Dumb-ass Gore. One wonders if that vacuum-sealed cranium cavity he posesses is capable of telling even ONE truth. Anyone who walks around spouting out-and-out baldface lies like ' I invented the Internet', 'Tipper & I were the inspiration for Love Story', 'I plowed steep hillsides with mules', 'I discovered Love Canal', and mountains of other lies tell alot about this pie-faced, condescending, completely annoying, fucked-up lousy excuse for a human being.
To lose the election would only be the beginning of what this cum stain deserves...I hope to find him one day asking me at the drive-tru if I want fries with my burger.

so the fuck what Briredfern? at least he has some fucking evidence to back it up unlike some people. Which I may add is sooo fucking typical of republicans, all BS, no actual substance.
The only reason I need to vote for Gore other than I agree with his views is that Bush is a fucking coke snorting Nazi and his only interest is in how fat his pocket book can get while he's in office, with the help of Daddy, of course. All you stupid fucking conservatives need to stop bitching because you fucking know that guy (Bush) is a fucking moron and is completely incompetant.
Oh yeah and if you wanna be critizing stupid shit people say why don't you add the part where Bush is talking about social security not more than a week ago, and says something along the lines of "Al Gore wants to make social security a federally controlled institution! What does he think it is? Some sort of Federal Act!?" no shit sherlock

This is the meaning of "invent", taken from the online Merriam-Webster Collegiate Thesaurus:
Entry Word: invent
Function: verb
Text: Synonyms CONTRIVE 2, concoct, cook (up), devise, dream up, formulate, frame, hatch (up), make up, vamp (up)
Related Word conceive, envision, imagine; "create", mint, produce, turn out; inaugurate, initiate
Looks as though invent and create mean the same thing. Next time you decide to write a novel, how about doing a little more research on the meaning of words. Al Gore is just picking up where Dan Quayle left off. Now, get off your knees and wipe Gore's sperm off of your face. If Gore wins (God forbid) you might as well get back on your knees...but he will not be in front of you...he will be behind you and all of us for that matter screwing us in the ass and not even thanking us! Take time to learn the TRUE story...

Although Gore's statement about his having helped foster the creation of the Internet might be exaggerated, he never claimed to have "invented" the Internet -- that claim is a the result of a persistent (and often willful) misreporting by the media of something he said during a CNN interview. "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."
Clearly, although Gore's phrasing was clumsy (and self-serving), he was not claiming that he "invented" the Internet (in the sense of having designed or implemented it), but that he was responsible for helping to create the environment (in an economic and legislative sense) that fostered the development of the Internet. Al Gore might not know nearly as much about the Internet and other technologies as his image would have us believe, and he certainly has been guilty of stretching (if not outright breaking) the truth before, but to believe that Gore seriously thought he could take credit for the "invention" of the Internet -- in the sense offered by the media -- is just silly. (To those who say the words "create" and "invent" mean the same thing: If they mean the same thing, then why have the media overwhelmingly and consistently cited Gore as having claimed he "invented" the Internet when he never used that word? The answer is that the words don't mean the same thing, but by substituting one word for the other, commentators can make Gore's claim sound [more] ridiculous.)
However, validating even the lesser claim Gore intended to make is problematic. Any statement about the "creation" or "beginning" of the Internet is difficult to evaluate, because the Internet is not a homogenous entity (it's a collection of computers, networks, protocols, standards, and application programs), nor did it all spring into being at once (the components that comprise the Internet were developed in various places at different times and are continuously being modified, improved, and expanded). Despite a spirited defense of Gore's claim by Vint Cerf (often referred to as the "father of the Internet") in which he stated "that as a Senator and now as Vice President, Gore has made it a point to be as well-informed as possible on technology and issues that surround it," many of the components of today's Internet came into being well before Gore's first term in Congress began in 1977, and it's hard to find any specific action of Gore's (such as his sponsoring a Congressional bill or championing a particular piece of legislation) that one could claim helped bring the Internet into being, much less validate Gore's statement of having taken the "initiative in creating the Internet."
It's true that Gore was popularizing the term "information superhighway" in the early 1990s (when few people outside academia or the computer/defense industries had heard of the Internet) and has introduced a few bills dealing with education and the Internet, but even though Congressman, Senator, and Vice-President Gore may always have been interested in and well-informed about information technology issues, that's a far cry from having taken an active, vital leadership role in bringing about those technologies. Even if Al Gore had never entered the political arena, we'd probably still be reading web pages via the Internet today.
No, Al Gore did not claim he "invented" the Internet, nor did he say anything that could reasonably be interpreted that way. The derisive "Al Gore said he 'invented' the Internet" put-downs are misleading distortions of something he said (taken out of context) during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN's "Late Edition" program on 9 March 1999. When asked to describe what distinguished him from his challenger for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey.

Saying that the ARPANET of 1969 and the Internet of today are the same is pretty ridiculous. Gore was on a commitee that took the inititive in supporting the furthered development of the Internet...the creation of the Internet as we currently know it. He used an unfortunate turn of phrase that has been taken out of context and used against him. But, then again, that's the story of all politics these days...
