SYDNEY -- With detention centers at bursting point and taxpayers footing the bill, Australian Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock has turned to shock tactics in an increasingly desperate attempt to keep illegal immigrants out of Australia.
Last week, he launched three videos for international television and overseas press outlets, with the emphasis on countries such as Iran, Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Pakistan -- where most boat people come from. The horror footage shows open-mouthed crocodiles and sharks with the warning that if boat people try to enter Australia illegally they could be eaten alive. If that fails, it warns they will be stuck in an inhospitable desert complete with snakes.
Additionally, the videos depict that people coming to Australia illegally are not welcome by government either -- that immigrants will be locked up and put in remote detention centers sometimes for as long as five years.
