 Nike Gets Fooled by Tribesmen | | By: Cronk | Published: 01/19/1999 | | | |
| Nike has a television commercial for hiking shoes that was shot in Kenya using Samburu tribesmen. The camera closes in on the one tribesman who speaks,
in native Maa. As he speaks, the Nike slogan "Just do it" appears on the screen.
An anthropologist at the University of Cincinnati, says the Kenyan is really saying, "I don't want these. Give me big shoes." Says Nike's Elizabeth Dolan, "We thought nobody in
America would know what he said."
Cronk's Commentary:
You just can't trust those Samburu, can you? You think that we Americans are the only ones with a sense of humor? That tribe must be shitting their pants with laughter.
Just because you're an ad exec doesn't mean you're fluent in Maa. Anyway, I hate Nike sneakers. They don't fit my feet very well for some reason. Give me big shoes, too.
